Death by Chocolate?

I went to the grocery store this afternoon to buy a box of tide (80 load size for $11 - for an excellent deal) and on my way to check out, I of course passed the Valentine candy stand. Chocolate!!! I could not resist. Should I go with the Almond Kisses or the Cherry Chocolate Kisses? Hmmm, I can't decide, I'll take both! And so I did.

I get home and open the bags in anticipation and decide to set a bowl of the Chocolate kisses on my magazine table for easy eating. I waited a few minutes to see if Mazie would be interested in them. Nope. Great! On with dinner I go. A while later I hear a crash from the living room. What Mazie is into now? I walk into the room, and too my utter dismay, the floor in front of the table is strewn with red, gold, silver and pink tin foil wrappers. MAZIE!!!! She had eaten at least 10 Kisses. Instantly my mind filled with stories and images of dogs poisoned by Chocolate.

I dash to my computer and do a search on how to make a dog throw-up. Make them swallow peroxide. Ya right! How am I going to do that? I found a syringe in my medicine draw and tried to get Mazie to swallow some in between sticking my finger down her throat to induce gagging. Neither method work. S. isn't answering his phone. What should I do? I am panicing by now and finally S. answers and his rushing home to help wrestle her down to make her choke down peroxide. Finally he comes home and we are able to make her swallow peroxide. 10 minutes later, up comes all the chocolate and her dinner and the peroxide. (Clean-up was real fun.) By now I have called the Vet's office, and they say that peroxide is toxic and I should get her into the Emergency Animal Hospital. The word Emergency hospital is synonomous with $$$. We decide to wait the night out, as the internet said the peroxide induces vomiting and will not stay in the stomach. I hope they're right.

It is now the next day, and Mazie is still with us - not her chipper self yet.

Lesson learned - don't keep chocolate at the dogs nose-level. What was I thinking?!!! Not even I can withstand a Chocolate temptation.
